Work on hundreds of new homes at Leicestershire’s first garden village has begun. Developers say Broadnook will be a “real benefit to the area”, with the scheme ultimately aiming to bring in nearly 2,000 new houses to the countryside. The scheme, which is set on land between Birstall and Rothley, is already underway with construction ongoing on the first phase of 107 properties from Davidsons Homes.

Now, work on the second phase from Cora Homes has begun and will see 154 additional homes built on site. Cora’s homes were greenlit by officials in May and will form part of the wider development, which aims to blend city living and countryside views. In all, 1,950 homes will be built across the major 37-acre site.

Concerns were raised during the application process about the grouping of these homes, with 15 set to be bunched together - a figure higher than previously agreed numbers with the developer. However, the scheme was unanimously approved.

Work on site has now begun following a ground-breaking ceremony. Steve Keenan, Cora’s construction director, said: “This is a momentous occasion for both our business and the county of Leicestershire as we commence works on this historic development. “Broadnook is designed to meet the long-term needs of homeowners while creating much-needed infrastruct.
