Ghanaian rapper Maradona Yeboah Adjei, known as Guru, has been disqualified from the University of Ghana’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) presidential election. An official SRC statement revealed that Guru needed to meet the required criteria for candidacy. The SRC Vetting Committee’s report, released on August 16, 2024, indicated that Guru and another candidate, Lawrence Edinam Egleh, were disqualified due to their non-residential status.

The University of Ghana SRC Constitution requires candidates to meet specific residential requirements to be eligible for executive positions. The report noted, “Upon careful examination of the documents submitted, it was discovered that two candidates, including Guru, indicated their non-residential status, which was further confirmed during the vetting process.” The constitution mandates that candidates reside in one of the university’s halls to qualify for a leadership role.

Since both Guru and Egleh did not fulfil these requirements, the Vetting Committee deemed them ineligible to run for the SRC presidency. “The committee, after a critical assessment of the qualification criteria, found that Maradona Yeboah Adjei and Lawrence Edinam Egleh do not meet the criteria stated in Article 30 (1) (a) of the UG-SRC Constitution and are therefore not eligible to contest for an Executive Officer position of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC), “ the report concluded..
