The game was an intriguing matchup between the reigning Division IV select champion Kittens and a Yellow Jackets squad that missed the playoffs last season.

Sparked by Horne's passing, Denham Springs (4-1) took control early and was never in trouble. The Yellow Jackets led 28-12 at the half, then held the Kittens scoreless in the last two quarters. Horne completed 16 of 29 passes for 214 yards.

Southern Lab (3-1) came into the game averaging better than 50 points, but it was held to 251 total yards. The Kittens got a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Jerry Bottley, who was 12 of 26 for 136 yards. Denham Springs sacked Bottley three times.
