Just days before filming for Todd Haynes' untitled LGBTQ romance was set to begin shooting on location in Mexico, its star Joaquin Phoenix exited the project. It has resulted in a 'nightmare' scenario unfolding, according to a producer working on the film. The film was set to follow two men (played by Phoenix and Top Gun: Maverick's Danny Ramirez) who leave the US and journey to Mexico.

It was said to feature a relationship that will “challenge” audiences, with a "strong sexual component." Describing the plot to Variety last year, director Haynes said: "It’s a love story between two men set in the 30s that has explicit sexual content that or at least it challenges you with the sexual relationship between these two men. One is a Native American character and one is a corrupt cop in LA.

" According Haynes, Phoenix had been pushing for the film to veer into "more dangerous territory, sexually." However, the 49-year-old star departed the film with days to spare before filming began with a source telling Variety he allegedly got "cold feet." Producer Christine Vachon - who works for Killer Films - has admitted it has been a very difficult time, especially as speculation has continued to mount as to Phoenix's reason for leaving.
