Sunday, January 26, 2025 In a shocking turn of events that has left the travel industry and local residents reeling, Mangawhai in Northland was ravaged by a powerful tornado overnight. The storm left a trail of destruction, obliterating homes, snapping trees, and cutting power to thousands, disrupting the region’s burgeoning tourism and travel industries. The picturesque township of Mangawhai now resembles a war zone.

Entire houses were destroyed, roofs torn off, and debris scattered across roads. Power poles were ripped from their bases, while trees were snapped like twigs. The chaotic aftermath has left two individuals hospitalized, one flown to Auckland Hospital and another taken to North Shore Hospital.

Kaipara District Mayor Craig Jepson described the devastation as unprecedented. “Quite frankly, I was blown away by what I saw,” Jepson remarked, acknowledging the scale of the disaster. At least four homes were completely destroyed, with many others severely damaged.

Jepson estimated the number of displaced residents to be much higher due to temporary tarpaulins replacing missing roofs. Many families have sought refuge with friends, relatives, or kind-hearted community members. The tornado’s impact on Mangawhai’s travel and tourism sectors is significant.

The region, known for its serene beaches and idyllic landscapes, has been a favorite among travelers. However, with roads blocked by debris and power outages crippling local businesses, the travel industry face.
