Pune: Traffic police units of the city as well as Pimpri Chinchwad have drawn up a proposal banning movement of heavy vehicles on Katraj-Dehu Road bypass during peak hours to avert traffic jams and reduce accidents . The proposal will be submitted to the district collector's office for approval. Police have proposed a ban on movement of heavy vehicles between 8 am and 10 am and from 5 pm to 9 pm.

"It has been observed that areas near Navale bridge, Vadgaon bridge, and Mutha bridge remain choc-a-bloc with traffic during peak hours," additional commissioner of police Manoj Patil said on Saturday. "There are also many areas in Pimpri Chinchwad where traffic jams take place on the bypass every day," Patil said. In order to ease vehicular movement in the morning and evening peak hours, we have suggested a ban on movement of heavy vehicles," Patil said.

"Many areas have developed in the past few years along the bypass. Many residents of these areas work in various IT companies at Hinjewadi IT Park. The bypass does not have any alternative road," he said.

"The areas near Navale bridge, Vadgaon bridge, and Mutha bridge have only two lanes, while the entire bypass is of three lanes. These narrow lanes hamper vehicular movement," he said. "In 2023, 31 people died in accidents on the bypass.

So far, 15 have died in accidents on the bypass in the first seven months of this year," Patil said. "The National Highways Authority of India has two big vacant plots in the Katraj ghat section. He.
