A police dog was left with a nasty injury after being hit in the face with a brick during violent unrest outside a Holiday Inn in Tamworth. PD Vixen was attacked as officers attended scenes of disorder in the Staffordshire town on Sunday night, with people seen throwing projectiles, smashing windows and starting fires. It comes as unrest spreads across the UK in the wake of a knife attack in Southport that left three children dead last week.

Staffordshire Police have released pictures of the pooch with a deep gash above her right eye which required medical treatment. The hero police dog was trying to stop thugs from storming the hotel when one of the rioters hit her in the face with a brick. Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Ellison said: "Police dogs are considered just as important as their human counterparts and so we are launching a full investigation to identify who assaulted a valued police dog. "We believe there is footage of the incident circulating on social media, so if anyone can share the footage or help us identify those involved, we can seek justice for our canine colleague. "The violence seen in Tamworth has been abhorrent, with two other police dogs injured too, and I know members of the public will be disgusted that a beautiful animal like Vixen.
