Pune: A 21-year-old plumber stole several parked two-wheelers in the last five months in and around Pimpri Chinchwad and Pune after mastering the technique of breaking handle-lock by watching videos. Sandip Sawant, an inspector from the Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch, said on Aug 9, a bike and a scooter were stolen from a housing society in Mhalunge near Hinjewadi. "Our team checked over 80 CCTV cameras and traced the suspect Abhishek Havalekar and his minor accomplice at Ambethan in Khed taluka.

The police have arrested Havalekar and detained his accomplice.” The police have recovered 18 stolen motorcycles worth Rs 8.9 lakh that Havalekar had abandoned in and around Ambethan and solved as many as 16 cases registered in Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad and Satara.

The officer said during the questioning, Havalekar admitted vehicle thefts . "He told us that he stole two-wheelers for joy rides," the officer said. "While surfing a video-sharing platform, Havalekar came across a clip of theft of two-wheelers.

He learned the technique of breaking handle-locks and started stealing vehicles," Sawant said. "He mainly stole Yamaha RX 100 motorcycles," Sawant said, adding, "We have recovered five Yamaha RX 100 motorcycles among other bikes."
