Pune: CCTV cameras that are non-functional in key areas like Laxmi Road, Shivaji Road, Deccan Gymkhana and Satara Road have been undergoing repairs and maintenance on priority for Ganeshotsav. Pune Municipal Corporation ( PMC ) said some CCTV surveillance cameras installed on these roads were not functioning because of reasons like cut wires, damage to cables and disruptions in overall connections. The repairs were being planned in phases.

The priority was to restart the cameras in Shivajinagar and Sahakarnagar since these areas would witness an increased footfall of citizens for Ganeshotsav. The issue of non-functioning CCTV cameras was raised recently before the civic administration by the police department. Citizens had also been demanding that PMC ensure CCTV surveillance systems function around the clock without disruptions as part of safety and security measures.

Officials from PMC’s electrical department said, “Civic teams are identifying the exact number of non-functional CCTV cameras and initiating corrective measures based on inspections. PMC plans to spend Rs84 lakh in the first phase of repairs which are being taken up immediately.” Officials said while they were in the process of finding the reasons behind non-functioning CCTVs, it could not be ruled out that the cables and connections were damaged recently during a drive held to remove illegal cables.

“Civic teams are communicating with various agencies involved in laying of cables,” they said. Meanwhi.
