Inspired by real historical events, the story adapted from Min Jin Lee’s bestselling novel journeys through the struggle of Zainichi Koreans amid the Japanese annexation of Korea, all refracted from the prism of Sunja’s family. Played by Kim Min-ha, the female lead was embroiled in a passionate romance with Hansu (Lee Min-ho) last season.
But when Sunja gets pregnant, he declines her marriage proposal making a shocking confession of already being married. He attempts to convince Sunja to remain his mistress, promising her a life of wealth and luxury, which she rejects.
