Our first house was right across from the school on Church Street. Yes, all six churches in my hometown were on the same street right in a row. Our house used to be the Catholic Rectory.

It was a beautiful old house with five bedrooms, an eat-in kitchen plus a formal dining room, living room, and library. There were two full baths, one on the main floor and one upstairs. There was a big sitting room in the center upstairs.

I used that for my sewing area. There was also a big front porch with fourteen windows and a back porch with a sidewalk to the church. I used the back porch to store baked stuff in the winter as it was nice and cold.

One thing I didn’t like was as you entered the house you came into a long hallway with the rooms off of them all with doors. One day I closed all of the doors and put signs on them: Apt. 1, Apt.

2, and up to Apt. 5. That was a big hint.

.. We removed three doors.

We had to keep a door on the bedroom and bathroom. The stairway to go up was at the end of the hall, so I put a sign “more apartments” upstairs. Glad my husband had a sense of humor.
