Opera Philadelphia and the Crossing are among the grantees from the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. The grants awarded a total $10.2 million to 39 Philadelphia-area cultural organizations and artists, including $3.
5 million to help ensure the future of several of the most prominent institutions in the city and $1 million in unrestricted fellowships to 12 local artists. The grants are designed to support innovative operating models, performances, exhibitions, events, and local artists. Opera Philadelphia is receiving a grant as part of the “Evolving Futures.
” The $480,000 grant will ensure the company’s commitment to leveraging strategic alliances in the co-creation and production of performance works, with innovative models. The Crossing will receive a grant in the connection to the natural world category and will commission a four-movement choral work that addresses climate change and the rise in natural disasters, presented in a video installation conceived by interdisciplinary artist Suzanne Bocanegra. Finally, Tyshawn Sorey received a fellowship for his compositions that bridge cultural and musical traditions found in contemporary classical music, Black American music, and African and European forms of improvised music.
