Wednesday, October 2, 2024 Southern California’s Ontario International Airport (ONT) has successfully completed a $90 million runway rehabilitation project, enhancing safety for the millions of travelers who choose ONT. This major upgrade included the removal of old concrete and the repaving of 80,000 square yards on Runway 8R-26L, alongside improvements to adjacent taxiways, construction of a new Taxiway S8, and the installation of energy-efficient LED lighting. The project, which began in February 2023 and continued through 2024, represents a significant investment in the airport’s infrastructure.
Of the $90 million total cost, nearly $67 million was funded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP), with the remaining amount financed by ONT’s operational revenue. In addition, last month, ONT secured an additional $4 million in AIP funding to support the design of improvements for the northernmost runway, 8L-26R. Alan D.
Wapner, President of the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA) Board of Commissioners, praised the project, stating, “We want to thank our elected leaders and regulatory partners for securing the funding to complete this critical project. Their support enables us to address infrastructure needs, invest in airport operations, and enhance the overall travel experience.” ONT has seen 42 consecutive months of year-over-year passenger growth and is on track to serve over 7 million passengers in 2024, a 75.
