Olly Murs shared his long-lost family pain as he uncovered the tragic truth about his great-grandmother. The Troublemaker singer, 40, was left in tears as he admitted the reason he wanted to explore his family history on Who Do You Think You Are? Was to help his dad Peter find out what happened to one of his relatives. Olly revealed his family hails from Latvia, and wanted to find out what happened to his grandad Eddie, and how he managed to escape to England.

During the tearjerking episode, Olly discovers Eddie was the result of an affair and, when the Soviet Union took over Latvia, he was taken out of the besieged country to England by his father. However, Olly’s great-grandmother was left behind in Latvia, and was imprisoned in a Soviet work camp and passed away in 1988. Olly discovered that she had been unable to find out if her son was alive, and spent decades looking for her long-lost son Eddie.

Eddie, meanwhile, had settled safely in Essex, but Olly’s dad Peter was determined to find out where the singer’s great-grandmother was buried, in order to get some closure on what happened to their family in Latvia. The emotional journey brought Olly closer to his dad, and he told The Sun that he was able to “unlock some doors” by doing the show, and helped bring his great-grandmother’s story to light. “Through learning about this, we definitely connected on a different level, and I'd never had that feeling between us before,” Olly shared.
