CHICAGO — For a member of America’s Democratic Party, it’s hard to think of anything better than having your bid for the presidency being blessed by one of the Obamas. Except perhaps, having that White House campaign endorsed enthusiastically by both of them. On Tuesday night, Kamala Harris found herself in that position as first former First Lady Michelle Obama rallied the crowd in Chicago in support of her campaign, to be followed by former president Barack Obama doing precisely the same.

Both of their speeches were powerful orations, inspiring the crowd, but also setting out truths about the challenges Harris and Tim Walz will have to overcome if they are to beat Donald Trump in November. And while the former president followed his wife in the speaking order – the pair hugged on stage after she introduced him as “somebody who knows a whole lot about hope” – they were in truth equal prime time headliners. “I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling fired up,” said the 63-year-old former president, adding that he was the only person foolish enough to agree to appear after the former first lady, given what a powerful speaker she was.
