A top awards ceremony celebrating the best in northern music is returning for a second year having wowed audiences with its debut in Manchester earlier this year. In March, The Northern Music Awards, which are hosted by the UK's largest music therapy charity Nordoff and Robbins, took place at Manchester's Albert Hall and saw the likes of Lisa Stansfield, Louis Tomlinson, Courteeners and Band on the Wall among the big winners at the inaugural event. Regarded as the only show of its kind to celebrate and recognise talent across the north, the awards are held in a different northern city each year to also ensure that each corner of the region is celebrated.

To coincide with next year's awards ceremony - which has been announced today to coincide with the Beyond the Music conference and festival held in Manchester this week - the shortlist for the Newcomer award has also been unveiled today. Last year's Newcomer of the Year award was won by Leeds quartet English Teacher, who went on to win the Mercury Music Prize in September for their debut album This Could Be Texas.
