One thing that Nita Ambani, the wife of billionaire business tycoon Mukesh Ambani, loves is Indian weaves, and she takes every opportunity to wear them. From Banarasi to Patola, she owns the most exquisite collection of sarees. Mrs Ambani wore a museum-worthy Jamawar saree for a dinner held in honour of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, in Washington, DC.

The saree, by designer Tarun Tahiliani, combined classic aari work with intricate knots. It took over 1,900 hours to create this masterpiece. The saree was paired with a tapered, collared blouse that blended traditional craftsmanship with modern tailoring.

According to Tarun Tahiliani’s Instagram page: “To achieve its flawless drape and texture, craftsmen embroidered heritage Jamawar shawls, which were then meticulously hand-painted, printed, and further embroidered. The result is a refined interplay of heritage artistry and modern tailoring.” The saree was embroidered with traditional Kashmiri work, Kashidakari.

All About Jamawar The word Jamawar is derived from ‘jam’, meaning a shawl or robe, and ‘war’, meaning yard. Jamawar is traditionally woven with a rich blend of Pashmina wool, cotton, and silk (the base was most often wool, with silk and cotton embellishments woven into it).
