For the first time in GTA 5 history, Rockstar is bringing the forces of the undead to its open world crime simulator. A new limited time mode will bring zombies to the game’s online mode as well as returning to North Yankton. GTA 5 Zombies returns to North Yankton Grand Theft Auto players have been glitching their way into North Yankton since 2013.

The snowy starting area from the opening mission of GTA 5 has been locked away from players, but Rockstar is finally opening it up. Announced in the game’s weekly patch notes , the new Community Challenge will allow players to fight the undead threat inside the snowy town from the game’s opening. “[Experience] a Community Challenge to dispatch marching tides of undead in a new limited-time mode,” Rockstar said.

While the new mode isn’t the full Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare experience that fans have craved, it does sound fun. Leaks claim the mode will see players engage in a wave-based survival battle against the undead forces. Will it return? As a limited time game mode, there’s no promise that zombies will return to GTA V.

While players have hoped that zombies will invade Los Santos in a true Undead Nightmare scenario, that still may not happen. With GTA 6 on the way, fans are also hoping that the next game in the series will also receive a Zombie spin-off after launch. Since Rockstar is planning episodic content for the game after avoiding story DLC for its predecessor, there is hope that fans will get weird.
