Ryan Reynolds and The Rookie actor Nathan Fillion have a history together. The two starred in the short-lived sitcom Two Guys and a Girl and continued to keep in touch even after the series ended. But Fillion once confided how working with Reynolds continued to influence his career over the years.

Nathan Fillion used Ryan Reynolds’ old jokes on his shows Two Guys and a Girl was quite different from the projects Fillion used to do. The series was simply about a couple of college students navigating their everyday lives. Although Reynolds was originally one of the show’s main stars, Fillion wasn’t.

He was promoted to series regular after making a few impressionable appearances on the show. “I did 10 episodes with them, and they invited me back as a regular. And I did two seasons,” Fillion once told Backstage .

It was one of Fillion’s first major projects coming off the soap opera One Life to Live , which couldn’t have been more different from the sitcom. Two Guys helped Fillion further hone his comedic chops, which have served him well throughout his career. It also gave Fillion the adrenaline rush of performing for an actual crowd.

”He wasn’t that good a handyman, and it turns out he was really cheap,” he told Entertainment Weekly about his character. “In other words, he was flawed, and what that show taught me was the kind of comedy gold that could be mined from a flaw. Two Guys and a Girl gave me what I had been missing from One Life to Live — the liv.
