The champion jockey rode more than 1000 winners in New Zealand, including 62 black type races and 12 at Group One level. The Kiwi star, who reportedly passed away on Friday night, last rode at Hastings on September 7.

The racing community gathered together for an emotional tribute at Ellerslie Racecourse on Saturday. New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing acknowledged the passing of Parkes with a statement. 'On behalf of the New Zealand Racing industry, NZTR is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of highly respected jockey Johnathan Parkes overnight,' began the statement.

'Our thoughts are with Johnathan’s closest family and friends at this time. 'Johnathan was one of our best, riding over 1,000 winners in New Zealand. Parkes won 62 black type races including 12 Group 1s.
