A growing number of tourists who visited the West African island country of Cape Verde are taking legal action after being struck down by a mysterious stomach illness during their vacations. Almost 1,000 holiday-goers have reported falling severely ill while staying at high-end hotels on the islands over the past three years, with many requiring hospitalisation. As many as 926 people have claimed they suffered from severe gastrointestinal symptoms, which turned their luxury trips.

Infections such as Shigella and Salmonella were identified in the guests being, many of who were confined to their hotel rooms for several days. Cordelia Plummer and Ian Waller, a couple from Birmingham and Kingston-Upon-Hull, are among those seeking legal assistance. During their two-week, all-inclusive stay at a five-star resort on the island of Sal in July, both fell seriously ill.

The couple paid $5,800 for the trip, only for Plummer to experience a full week of severe vomiting and diarrhea.
