Like the real Jane Grey, the reign of turned out to be a short one. Amazon’s has canceled the period drama, which combined romance and alternate-world fantasy. The cancellation comes about seven weeks after Prime Video released all eight episodes of the show’s first (and now only) season.

, based on a novel by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows, is set in a 16th century England where humans co-exist with shape-shifters who can take the form of either people or animals. Jane Grey (Emily Bader) is an ordinary human, known as a Verity, who becomes sympathetic to the oppressed shape-shifters, known as Ethians — which will become a problem for the ruling class as Jane rises to power. Edward Bluemel, Rob Brydon, Dominic Cooper, Anna Chancellor, Jordan Peters, Kate O’Flynn, Henry Ashton, Jim Broadbent and Ollie Chris (who narrates) star alongside Bader.

received mostly favorable reviews from critics; s Angie Han wrote that while the series is never “quite as edgy or uproarious as seems to presume it is, the eight-hour season still .” The show didn’t catch on in a big way with viewers, however; Prime Video doesn’t share detailed ratings data for its programming, but didn’t break into Nielsen’s top 10 streaming charts in the month after its release. Gemma Burgess created the series and was co-showrunner with Meredith Glynn.
