A mum felt like 'crying' when a viral hair trend left her looking like a '17th century gentleman' - but she still had to go into work. Sally-Marie Bartlam-Hawes spotted a hair tutorial online for a 40s pin-up style and decided to set to work to achieve the look at 10pm one evening. The 40-year-old pinned up her hair in special curlers with setting lotion and secured them in a turban to sleep in.

But the next morning, Sally-Marie began to panic when she unravelled the rollers and a 'poodle-like' ringlet appeared. After trying to brush out her 'giant bouffant' hairdo, the NHS admin worker was left looking more like she was wearing a 'judge's wig' than the 40s bombshell she'd hoped for. Despite her best efforts, the mum-of-two could not get rid of the curls so had no choice but to go into work - praying her boss didn't put her on the front desk.

Sally-Marie, from Portsmouth, Hampshire, said: "I got up in the morning. I started to unravel it and parts of it were still damp. The first one came out as a super tight ringlet and I thought 'oh, that's quite poodle'.

"Some were super curly, some were very bedraggled. I started to panic because I had work in 45 minutes. I had no time to rewash and blow dry and all of that nonsense.

"As I brushed it out, the more I felt like a 17th century gentleman rather than a 40s bombshell. I was not expecting a giant bouffant of hair. I wanted to cry.
