Thursday, August 22, 2024 The Mumbai-Goa Expressway is set to open by December, cutting travel time between the two cities from 12 hours to just 6, revolutionizing the commute. The Maharashtra Government has proposed the construction of a new expressway connecting Mumbai to Goa, with the Konkan Expressway now under discussion. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will oversee the development of this 376 km long, 6-lane access-controlled expressway.
According to DNA India, the proposed Greenfield Expressway will follow the scenic Konkan coast. Preparation for the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the Konkan Expressway has already begun. MSRDC has initiated the process of obtaining approval from the Environment Department for the highway, as reported by NBT.
This new corridor will significantly reduce travel time and offer a more comfortable experience for commuters. The expressway will connect Sindhudurg to Panvel (Navi Mumbai) via Raigad and Ratnagiri. Currently, the journey from Mumbai to Sindhudurg takes 12-13 hours, but this project aims to cut that time down to around 6 hours.
In addition to cutting travel time, the project is anticipated to enhance tourism and generate job opportunities in the districts along the highway. NEWS 18 quoted an MSRDC official stating that the expressway will include 14 interchanges. The project is estimated to cost ₹68,000 crore and will span 3,792 hectares, including 146 hectares of forest land.
