Jon Tester has leveraged insults from former President Donald Trump about his appearance into a new campaign slogan.At an Aug. 9 rally on the Montana State University campus in Bozeman, Trump called Montana’s Democratic senator fat, saying that Tester has the “biggest stomach I have ever seen.”Tester responded last weekend with a series of posts on the social media platform X.“Big Sky country is big guy country,” one post stated, with the phrase emblazoned on a T-shirt. Sales of the $28 shirt go toward his reelection bid. I might not look like most people in Washington. And that’s fine by me.”The post had been viewed more than 650,000 times as of Wednesday.Let’s help Tester hit back against this idiotic childish bully. Also, friendly reminder, we’ll also need to make sure we hold onto the Montana Supreme Court to protect abortion rights:The Montana Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that a 2013 law requiring parental consent for minors to obtain an abortion is unconstitutional, finding the statute violates a minor’s right to privacy and equal protection.The 36-page decision authored by Justice Laurie McKinnon upheld a 2023 state district court’s decision in the matter and came after attorneys for the state and plaintiffs in the case, Planned Parenthood of Montana, delivered oral arguments to the court this spring.The unanimous ruling found that, because the Montana Constitution grants minors the same rights as adults, the Parental Consent for Abortion Act “violates the fundamental right of a minor to control their body and destiny” and again asserted the court’s 1999 precedent that abortion access is protected by the right of privacy outlined in the state Constitution.And a friendly reminder about Sheehy on this issue:Candidate Tim Sheehy clearly does not understand the Montana value of personal privacy. Sheehy has called abortion “murder,” and is endorsed by an extreme anti-abortion group that supports a national abortion ban.He has even refused to support federal legislation to protect access to IVF treatment. And most recently, Sheehy doubled down on his own support for a national abortion ban.Sheehy can’t see that most Montanans support protecting access to all reproductive health care services, including abortion. This is a man who doesn’t understand how important protecting reproductive freedom and privacy is to our state.Health, Democracy and Freedom are on the ballot and we need to get ready to keep Tester in the Senate and protect abortion rights in Montana.
