Some 84 MPs have signed an Early Day Motion put forward by Lib Dem MP Wendy Chamberlain. The deputy leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Wendy Chamberlain, has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) calling for a debate in Parliament to put forward a “proper plan” to compensate women born in the 1950s affected by changes to their State Pension age. The motion has already gathered support from 84 MPs since it was proposed on July 17 - the majority being Lib Dems.

It reads: "That this House notes with concern the losses borne by 1950s women as a result of maladministration by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), welcomes the findings of the independent inquiry of the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) and further notes that on average over 100 1950s-born women die daily, many of whom have suffered losses and die without compensation.” The statement finishes by urging the UK Government “to honour the recommendations of the Ombudsman, and come forward with a proper plan to compensate these women”. A full list of MPs supporting the motion can be found here.

Last month, new Pensions Minister Emma Reynolds MP confirmed plans to meet representatives from the Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaign. However, due to the parliamentary summer recess, this looks unlikely to happen before September. This will also delay any decision by the Backbench Business Committee on whether to schedule Chamberlain's EDM for a debate by MPs.
