Motorists using a busy A-road will face almost a month of diversions. London Road in Battle closed on Monday for reconstruction works to begin and will remain closed day and night until August 30. East Sussex County Council and Balfour Beatty, which is working in partnership with the highways team, said the aim is to improve the road and install new drainage systems.

Access to residents will be restricted and anyone needing vehicle access into the area will need to be escorted by site marshals. A diversion will be in place for 25 days and will take motorists via High Street, Upper Lake, Lower Lake, Battle Hill, Hastings Road, Battle Road, The Ridge West, Junction Road, Sedlescombe Road North, Ebden’s Hill, Kent Street, Whydown Hill, Woodmans Green Road and Vinehall Road.
