Tomorrow is Remembrance Day — a time to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of our veterans. For me, this day holds special meaning. My grandmother, born in 1919, raised 12 children while my grandfather served in the Canadian military for many years.
My mom was born in Shilo, a town with deep military roots. My personal connection to Canada’s military fills me with gratitude and inspires me to honour the legacy of veterans and their families in my own way. Food is at the heart of so many family traditions, and it’s one way to remember and celebrate those we’ve loved and lost.
This Remembrance Day, consider preparing a heritage dish to celebrate the stories and legacy of those who served. Set the table, share memories, and take a moment to appreciate our veterans and their dedication to our country. For me, it’s a way to feel connected to my family’s past and to Canada’s legacy of strength, freedom, and resilience.
Here are a few classic Canadian recipes that bring the comfort of home and cherished memories to the table. Bannock is a beloved bread in many Indigenous communities, symbolizing family, resilience, and togetherness. Made with simple ingredients like flour, water or milk, and a touch of oil or lard, bannock is hearty and versatile, passed down through generations.
Serve it warm with butter, Saskatoon berry jam, or as a side to your favourite soup—a meaningful way to recognize the strength and service that Indigenous veterans have brought to Canada.
