Pune: The southwest monsoon has missed its normal withdrawal dates for Mumbai (Oct 8) and Pune (Oct 9), with meteorologists saying monsoon was unlikely to retreat from these cities even in the next 2-3 days. IMD 's latest forecast has put several districts, including Mumbai and Pune, on a yellow alert for thundershowers till Oct 13. SD Sanap, a scientist at IMD-Pune, told TOI, "The monsoon might not withdraw from Mumbai and Pune for at least the next two to three days.
Normally, monsoon withdraws from parts of north Maharashtra, including north Konkan, around Oct 5. By Oct 10, the withdrawal covered a significant portion of the state." The India Meteorological Department (IMD) update on Wednesday stated that the line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon passed through 29°N/84°E, Nautanwa, Sultanpur, Panna, Narmadapuram, Khargone, Nandurbar, Navsari and 20°N/70°E.
This imaginary line demarcates the regions where the monsoon has withdrawn from those where it still lingers. The IMD district forecast indicated that Thane and Pune were very likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds (30-40 km/h) at isolated places from Oct 10-13. Mumbai may see similar conditions as Thane, with light to moderate rain or thundershowers for Oct 10-13.
Raigad may see thunderstorms with lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds throughout the four-day period. Other districts like Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Nashik, Ahmednagar, K.
