A Middlesbrough restaurant has been told that ‘major improvement is necessary’ following a food hygiene inspection. Lounge Afrique Restaurant has been giving a rating of one after an inspection on July 16. The Corporation Road eatery, located opposite Turtle Bay and next to Lucky Cat Boba café, was ‘established to serve the needs of those who love the taste of authentic African food and entertainment all in one place’.

The Food Standards Agency website states that ‘improvement is necessary’ in the areas of hygienic food handling as well as the cleanliness and condition of facilities and building. Hygienic food handling looks at the venue’s preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage. Cleanliness and condition of facilities and building includes having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control to enable good food hygiene.

However, Lounge Afrique Restaurant’s management of food safety has been deemed as ‘major improvement necessary’. This area which was inspected by food safety officers rates the system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.
