Pune: The India Meteorological Department ( IMD ) on Friday issued a yellow alert for the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra , forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall from Sept 1 to 3. Pune city is expected to receive light to moderate rainfall during this period. IMD scientist SD Sanap told TOI, “The increased rainfall activity in the coming days is attributed to a well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal and its west-northwestward movement.
As of 11.30am on Aug 30, this system was located over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, off the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts. It is likely to intensify into a depression within the next 36 hours as it moves further west-northwestwards.
” The IMD’s Friday forecast stated fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall over western and central India during the upcoming week. For Maharashtra specifically, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Vidarbha on Sept 1 and 2, while Madhya Maharashtra may experience isolated heavy rainfall from Sept 3-5. Marathwada is also expected to see isolated heavy rainfall from Sept 1-3.
“Whenever there’s a system over the Bay of Bengal moving west-northwestward, active monsoon conditions start prevailing over parts of Maharashtra. The current system is likely to result in increased rainfall activity, particularly over Vidarbha, Marathwada, and the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra,” Sanap said.
