Pune: A memorial of Colonel Vijay Bakshi , a recipient of Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) posthumously for his bravery during the Indian Peace Keeping Force operation in Sri Lanka in 1989, was unveiled at Vijay Vihar Housing Society in Wagholi on Sunday morning. All residents and ranks of 6th battalion of 8th Gorkha Rifles regiment residing in the colony contributed to the memorial. It has a bust of Col Bakshi with a citation of his gallantry.
Lt Gen Sanjeev Chauhan, president of Gorkha Brigade, was the chief guest at the function. Col Bakshi was born on April 3, 1943, and hailed from Punjab. Soon after his graduation from Ramjas College, New Delhi, he was selected to join the Army at the age of 22 and commissioned on December 25, 1965, into the 6th battalion.
On March 2, 1989, he led an operation against LTTE militants in the Wani sector. He was injured and succumbed later . Similarly, a housing society, The Tucker Enclave, named after Ashok Chakra (posthumously) awardee Captain Eric James Tucker, unveiled a bust of the officer to honour his contributions on the war front.
