Pune: A doctor and his wife have been booked for allegedly defrauding five people of Rs41 lakh since 2022 by offering them space in their hospital to set up pharmacy and pathology lab outlets, only to renege on their promise. One of the victims is a 34-year-old resident of Navi Sangvi area, who works with a private firm and lost Rs11 lakh. He lodged a complaint in this connection with the Dehu Road police on Sunday.

Speaking with TOI, an officer said that according to the complainant’s statement, when he approached the doctor with the proposal to start a pharmacy, he was told that he runs a 36-bed hospital at a prominent spot. “He was also told that he would get good business if he started the pharmacy there. Following this, he paid Rs11 lakh to the accused,” added the officer.

The complainant went on to add that despite the repeated follow-ups, he could not start the pharmacy in the hospital. “He then learned that the doctor and his wife had taken money from two more people to start a pharmacy. Later, two more men had approached him and said that the accused had taken money from them, too, to start a pathology lab on the hospital premises,” the officer had said.
