Mediahuis Ireland journalists and contributors have won several prizes at this year's Travel Extra Travel Journalist Awards, held in Dublin. The overall Travel Extra Journalist of the Year Award for 2024 went to Domhnall O’Donoghue, for a body of work published in The Belfast Telegraph among other outlets. Mediahuis Ireland group travel editor Pól Ó Conghaile won ‘Best Home Market (Ireland)’ for a collection of work on Ireland, including Ireland’s Wild West: Why Connemara has such a hold on the Irish imagination (and our holidays)’ , published in the Irish Independent’s Weekend magazine.
Catherine Murphy won ‘Best Sustainable’ for ‘ Sustainable Algarve ’, and Isabel Conway ‘Best Northern Ireland’ for ‘Derry air has never sounded so sweet’. Both features were published in the Sunday Independent’s People & Culture magazine. Pól Ó Conghaile and Anna of Mayo Tourism.
Photo: Arthur Carron Contributor Paddy Barry won ‘Best Long Haul’ category for ‘ Our mad drive to Mongolia ’, a piece documenting a 15,000km journey several friends in their 60s, 70s and 80s undertook from Kerry in small, second-hand cars. It was published in the Irish Independent’s Weekend magazine. The awards were presented at in Thomas Prior Hall, Clayton Hotel Ballsbridge, to coincide with the annual Holiday World Show taking place at the RDS Simmonscourt this weekend.
