Awami League presidium member, former minister, deputy leader in parliament and former MP of Sherpur-2 constituency Begum Matia Chowdhury was laid to eternal rest at Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard at Mirpur in the capital. The first namaj-e-janaza of Matia Chowdhury was held at her Ramna Apartment Complex residence in the capital at 10:00am on Thursday and the last janaza was held at Azad Mosque, at Gulshan in the capital. She was then taken to Martyred Intellectual Graveyard for burial.
Earlier, leaders and workers of the Awami League and other organizations paid tribute to her. On behalf of journalists, the journalist leaders also paid tribute. Veteran politician and former minister Matia Chowdhury passed away at a hospital in the capital at 11:00am on Wednesday at the age of 82.
