Match of the Day could be set to get a female anchor after Gary Lineker confirmed he is stepping down from the role. Lineker will no longer be presenting the hit BBC sports show after the season ends, though he is confirmed to be continuing BBC coverage for the FA Cup in 2025/26 and the World Cup in 2026. Now a female presenter is topping the betting odds to replace Lineker.
Alex Scott is the current female favourite, with Ladbrokes reporting that her odds have been slashed to 4/1 down from 6/1. Other names high up on the list include Kelly Cates at 4/1 and Gabby Logan at 6/1. Mark Chapman still remains favourite by a thread, with his odds laced at 7/4.
Labrokes spokesperson Nicola McGeady said: “Momentum is building for Alex Scott to replace Gary Lineker on Match of the Day next season, with money pouring in for her overnight. "Mark Chapman may be the frontrunner now but girl power is starting to dominate the betting." Fans on X have been sharing their own thoughts, with one writing: “With Gary Lineker leaving Match of the Day at the end of the season, I wonder if there’ll be a female presenter next season like Gabby Logan or Alex Scott.
” Somebody else said: “I wonder what the odds are on the next Match of the Day presenter being female.” While a third fan enthused: “Alex Scott would be a good choice to present Match of the Day, as would Gabby Logan. The show needs a revamp.
