was estranged from her sister Alison The singer reportedly was not in contact with her sister because of Alison's driving them apart. Mariah has spoken about their tumultuous relationship in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. She stated at the time that it would be "emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact" with her or their brother Morgan.

Throughout her memoir, the 55-year-old detailed how her sister was “deeply wounded” but also “the most brilliant and broken person I have ever known.” She spoke on how Alison saw "things a child should never see" before Mariah was born which affected her elder sister, who was eight years older, greatly. Mariah added the mother-of-two experienced things that "damaged and derailed her girlhood.

" Their parents, Patricia and Alfred Roy Carey, divorced in 1973 when Mariah was only three so Alison "was fully aware when the family unit unraveled and our parents turned on each other; she absorbed the full pain of a family coming undone." Mariah also shared that Alison allegedly struggled with drug abuse and gave Mariah drugs when she was young. “My sister drugged me with Valium, offered me a pinky nail full of cocaine, inflicted me with third-degree burns, and tried to sell me out to a pimp,” Mariah wrote.

Alison denied those allegations and filed a lawsuit against the $1.25million in February 2021, claiming in her autobiography Mariah inflicted "immense emotional distress" and caused her "public humil.
