Manchester United have completed the signings of Bayern Munich pair Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui in a sensational double swoop on the eve of the new season. De Ligt, 25, has put pen to paper on a five-year contract and could make his debut for United on Friday when the Red Devils begin their Premier League campaign at home to Fulham . United's outlay could rise to £42.

9m as a result of £4.3m in potential add-ons. Having learned his trade under Erik ten Hag at Ajax , De Ligt has been brought in to remedy the Red Devils' defensive injury woes.

The Netherlands international will be joined at Old Trafford by former Bayern team-mate Noussair Mazraoui, who also starred in Ten Hag's Ajax team, once the Morocco right-back completes a separate £12.9m deal. Despite only being a teenager, De Ligt captained Ten Hag's side that reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019, famously beating both Real Madrid and Juventus before losing to Tottenham .

The 25-year-old has been a long-term target for United, who failed to sign him two years ago when he moved from Italian giants Juventus, the club he'd left Ajax for. De Ligt chose to join Bayern in 2022 and after a productive first season in which they won the Bundesliga title, injuries scuppered his second term under Thomas Tuchel . Ten Hag hopes that De Ligt, who didn't make an appearance for his country at Euro 2024 , will rediscover his best form at Old Trafford, particularly in light of £52m signing Leny Yoro pickin.
