Vadodara: A resident of Tandalja area has been arrested by the crime branch for duping a man of Rs 17.5 lakh. Abdul Javed Sheikh took the money from the complainant this year by promising to send his daughter to Canada.

According to the police, Sheikh came in contact with the complainant, a resident of Chhota Udepur, in 2021. Sheikh told the complainant that he could send the latter’s children abroad for a lesser fee. The complainant trusted Sheikh and asked him to get his daughter a visa for Canada as well as a work permit.

Sheikh took Rs 17.5 lakh from the complainant, apart from his daughter’s passport, but didn’t work on getting the visa. The accused later switched off his phone, following which a police complaint was filed against him at Bodeli police station in July this year.

Sheikh had been absconding for the last one-and-a-half months, and he was nabbed by the crime branch from Hathikhana area on Tuesday.
