Ludhiana: Arshdeep Singh and Amarjeet Singh had found an easy way to make a quick buck. They would buy SUVs and luxury cars at a cheaper price from other states, forge no-objection certificates of Punjab for the vehicles, put a forged registration numberplate on them, and then sell them for a profit of around Rs 4 lakh each in Punjab. For the duo from Ludhiana, it was a victimless crime.

But the long arms of the law — CIA-II wing of Ludhiana police commissionerate in this case — finally caught up with them. Ludhiana additional deputy commissioner of police (investigation) Amandeep Singh Brar on Wednesday told media about the police arresting car dealer Arshdeep alias Arsh (40) and mechanic Amarjeet alias Amar (43) with five high-end cars — a Mercedes, a BMW, a Maruti Suzuki Jimny, a Toyota Innova and a Hyundai Creta. The investigators also found that Arsh had also been posing as an Punjab Police ASI, and carrying a forged police ID card with him, to go unnoticed at toll plazas and police check posts.

Arsh is a resident of BRS Nagar, while Amar lives in Shaheed Karnail Singh Nagar. ADCP Brar said they arrested Arsh from Dugri on a tip-off and seized a BMW car, whose numberplate read PB A/F. When they checked, police came to know the BMW car had a Delhi number.

“To sell such cars here in Punjab, one needs to have NOC. However, the accused would forge NOCs and would replace the original numberplate with a forged one,” said the ADCP. The ADCP added Arsh had used his pic.
