Pune: Areas of Lonavla witnessed heavy waterlogging after the popular tourist destination received incessant rainfall over the weekend. Lonavla reported 145mm of rainfall between 7am and 5pm on Sunday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has recorded 232.
5mm of rainfall in Lonavla during the 24 hours ending at 8.30am on Sunday. The waterlogging and subsequent traffic congestion lasting for a couple of hours caused inconvenience for residents and tourists.
The officials of Lonavla Municipal Council (LMC), however, said the water level receded soon after the rain stopped for a couple of hours. “Waterlogging was reported in several areas such as MSRTC stand, Kaivalya Dham and Bapdev temple area, but it was because the water was beyond the carrying capacity of our drainage line. Soon after rain activity halted in the evening, the water level in these areas receded in less than two hours,” Ashok Sabale, CEO of Lonavla Municipal Council, said.
A civic official said the administration has deployed police personnel at popular tourist destinations such as the Bhushi dam and Tata dam as the water level in both these dams has increased. Several devotees who visited the Ekvira Devi temple adjacent to Karla Caves also reported knee-deep water on the way to the hill.
