Lives remembered: Ron Yeats, Brian Trueman and Patrick Stoddart

Terence Crolley writes: I never met Ron Yeats ( obituary, September 9 ) but I did see him play for Liverpool. He rarely made an error but I recall one comedic misjudgment. In one match at Anfield — against whom I cannot remember — a whistle blew, which Yates assumed was blown by the referee instead of a supporter from the opposing team.

Yates stopped playing and picked up the ball in his own penalty area, with the resulting penalty being awarded. This rare error does not, however, detract from the immense contribution he made to the beautiful game.
