American Idol 's Lionel Richie has broken his silence on Carrie Underwood joining him and Luke Bryan at the judges panel and it comes with a warning . The 41-year-old is replacing Katy Perry as a panelist, ABC announced Thursday , much to many fans' excitement. The Grammy-winning singer won American Idol in 2005, making her the first alumnus to return as a judge.

Speaking to E! News , he said that it makes a lot of sense that the show's producers asked her to be the next judge.

"It's not someone we have to get used to," he added before saying Underwood has a great story, having won American Idol years before. Richie explained that he and Bryan have never had to stand on the show's stage and win over the country. "She's been there, done that.

She can really speak from what they have to go through, what they're feeling. And on top of that, be a ham sandwich like the two of us," he added. "Welcome to the ham sandwich squad.

" Richie looks forward to talking with Underwood and "welcoming her in." "I hope she has a really great sense of humor because she's got to sit next to Luke. All I can say to you is, 'Hang on.
