Seventy years ago I joined the NRA as a Life Member. I believed in its emphasis on sportsmanship, responsible ownership and use of firearms, marksmanship and safety training. Above all, safety.
In the intervening 70 years, I write to share some lessons I have regrettably learned. I have learned that the NRA is now a corrupt right-wing political organization, no longer deserving of its tax-exempt status. Under the leadership of Wayne LaPierre and cronies, they have now been adjudged to be civilly liable for stealing millions of dollars from NRA member's dues to treat themselves to luxury trips, expensive clothing, jewelry, etc.
, and no one in NRA leadership cared. I have seen that the NRA has endorsed and promoted the political aspirations of Donald Trump, a convicted aging felon with 34 felony counts and hundreds of millions of dollars of civil liabilities for sexual assault, fraudulent corporations, fraudulent "universities" and more. He is a draft-dodger, one who made fun of Gold Star parents, derided service members who lost their lives in combat as "suckers," and bragged about his ability to avoid income taxes on his billions to a country he purports to serve.
