I bring a very up-close perspective of Representative Samuel Azzinaro, because we have sat next to each other for several years in the House Chamber as we worked together for the people of Westerly. I have keenly observed Sam’s boundless energy, dedication and commitment both at the State House and while attending many events in Westerly. Sam Azzinaro is the definition of a dedicated public servant for the State of Rhode Island! For those who have enjoyed the playgrounds and other activities at Rotary Park, it was Sam who worked behind the scenes several years ago to make it possible.

As a long-time former town official, Sam also helped expand the beachfront in the Misquamicut area. One of his greatest legacies is the Westerly Education Center, a concept that Sam helped to develop as a unique public-private partnership. He convinced philanthropist Charles Royce to make an initial investment.

He wouldn’t take no for an answer in securing the necessary annual state funding and helped to obtain commitments from Electric Boat, CCRI, RIC, URI and various state agencies. It has become a remarkable success story. The Westerly Education Center, in less than 8 years, has provided workforce training to more than 30,000 students in high-skilled jobs.

Starting with one trade, Electric Boat now offers training for eight different trades and has hired 4,000 workers at its facilities at Quonset Point and Groton, Conn. Many of them from Westerly. And that’s not to even mention the sign.
