Lake Norman High School Athletic Director Jay Keener has left the school. In a statement issued on X (formerly Twitter), Keener said farewell to the school. Keener's departure comes less than a week after the Lake Norman boys basketball team's season came to an end due to use of an ineligible player.

The team was 27-1 and had advanced to the third round of the 4A state playoffs as the West Region's top seed when the season was suspended. When the season ended in disappointing fashion, Lake Norman Principal Bill Shapcott said, "You have two semesters of grades, and it was missed. The first semester, eligibility was set, everybody was fine.

But when you make a check late in the season, it was caught. The (Athletic Director Jay Keener) catches and reports it. Hats off to him.

Integrity." A spokesperson for Iredell-Statesville Schools said Keener has been reassigned to a teaching position at South Iredell High School. "A mistake was made, and we are suffering the consequences for it," Shapcott said last week.

"I hate it because it affects every student athlete on that team and their parents who sacrificed so much for years to get here. I hurt for those people, the student manager, obviously our player involved. They're kids, and it hurts when you see kids hurting like this.
