A record number of voters cast ballots early in Lafayette Parish. There are also a record number of voters on the parish's inactive voter list. Most of the 13,462 inactive voters are people who have not voted in the two most recent federal elections, or about four years, and have not responded to address confirmation notices by mail.

Voters can check names on the inactive voter list on the Secretary of State's website . Those listed as inactive can still cast their ballots on Election Day by confirming their current address in writing at their polling place. "The majority are eligible to vote," said Lafayette Parish Registrar of Voters Charlene Menard.

"Anybody who is inactive — it will be notated in the precinct register — must fill in an address confirmation card." The primary reason there are more inactive voters than usual in Lafayette Parish is because of canvassing and redistricting done over the summer. Three rounds of mail went out to registered voters as a result.

Any returned mail, which often means the voter moved, resulted in a voter being listed as inactive, Menard said. Despite the record number of e.
