NEW DELHI: Senior advocate Kapil Sibal who is representing West Bengal government in the Supreme Court in the Kolkata rape-murder case urged the apex court to discontinue the live streaming of the hearing, mentioning threats received by his female colleagues. He reported that the female lawyers in his team were getting threats of violence on social media, including that of acid attacks and rape. However, CJI DY Chandrachud said that court will not stop live streaming as it is a matter of public interest.
The Supreme Court also assured Sibal that it will step in if there are any threats to lawyers and others, news agency PTI reported. The bench was adjudicating on the suo motu case regarding the rape and murder of 31-year-old resident doctor, who was found dead at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The apex court on Tuesday ordered the Bengal government to enhance the security measures at hospitals including installation of CCTV cameras and adequate toilet facilities, within two weeks.
The court also stated that the West Bengal government cannot stop women doctors from working on night shifts. Women do not want concessions, but equal opportunities and women doctors are willing to work in all conditions, the top court stated. A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and comprising justice JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra made these remarks when it was informed about the West Bengal government's decision to prevent women in working night shifts.
