Alejandro Garnacho, Matthijs de Ligt and Kobbie Mainoo were named on the bench by the Red Devils and had Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Manuel Ugarte come in from Saturday’s goalless draw at Crystal Palace. It was a promising opening for the Dutch charges who threatened on four minutes with Sam Lammers going wide from a delivery across the face of the attacking area. Twente were soon in some bother where a rash clearance at the back saw Mees Hilgers nearly netted an own-goal and needed the goalkeeping reflexes of Lars Unnerstall to save the day.

Unnerstall were undone in the closing ten minutes to halftime where a loose ball from Hilgers granted Christian Eriksen license to step in and curled in the top corner. The boys from the Eredivisie looked to show a lot more after the break, but the Red Devils seek to remain resilient and in full control of the contest. Garnacho looked to further inspire his charges moments after coming with his trademark runs in the wider channels and pullbacks, but nothing of note materialised. Eriksen, who got the opener in superb fashion, turned villain when he conceded possession in a dangerous area to Lammers who darted in the area to beat Andre Onan at the near post. The host had a big chance to seal it at the death through a towering header from Maguire after he met a corner, but Unnersta.
