Guwahati: Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR), known across the world for its Indian one-horned rhinoceros, is set to reopen for tourists from Oct 1 . The national park was shut for the last five months due to the monsoon floods , officials said. Divisional forest officer of the eastern Assam wildlife division, Arun Vignesh C S, said, “The park under the jurisdiction of eastern Assam wildlife division, was shut for May 15 due to monsoon floods and will be opened for tourists for the 2024-25 season from Oct1 subject to weather conditions.
” However, the DFO said, only three out of the four forest ranges of the Unesco world heritage site will be opened for the tourists. “In view of the damaged condition of the roads due to floods, the park will be partially opened for jeep safaris in three ranges — Kaziranga range Kohora, Western range Bagori and Burapahar range. The restoration work of roads in Agoratoli range is underway, if it is completed on time, the range might also be opened for tourists,” the DFO added.
This time the park authority is planning to introduce new facilities in the Burhapahar and Agoratoli ranges, which experience less tourist footfall compared to the Bagori and Kohora ranges, Vignesh added. The DFO told TOI, “Due to the presence of plenty of accommodation and other facilities, tourists mostly visit Kohora and Bagori range. For that, the load on the ecosystem of these ranges increase and tourists also miss out on the opportunity to .
